your stay

Below you will find a wealth of information to get the most of your stay at The Old Mill Holiday Hostel. If you have any further questions, please send them our way.

Check-in information

Check-in is from 3:30 pm to 10:30 pm inclusive. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to check-in outside of these times but it is best to shoot us on an email to verify.

For those arriving before the allocated check-in time, it may be possible to store your luggage in the common area. Please make this known to the on-duty staff when you arrive and also take all valuables with you as we will not be held responsible for lost items. Depending on how busy the morning routine is, it may be possible to check in early, especially if you ask the receptionist very very nicely! We strongly encourage all our guests to check in the earlier the better. There are times where you may have to wait due to others checking in or if the reception is closed – this just means one of us is on a break, or we have gone to the local supermarket to fetch supplies for the hostel. Please make sure of the common area located in the court yard. Why not make yourself a cuppa of tea or coffee? If you have been waiting for a very long period of time, do not hesitate to contact one of the numbers located beside the reception’s main door.

For those wanting to arrive after check-in has closed, this might be possible, particularly if you have booked out a room for yourself and/or your group. However, if your booking is in a shared dormitory, this may not be possible as some guests may already be asleep at this time. It is best to get in touch to let us know.

During Your Stay

You are more than welcome to make use of the hostel’s facilities during your stay. There are times when certain areas may need to be closed to facilitate cleaning. Please follow this link to learn more about the hostel’s facilities.

If you have any issues throughout your stay, please make this known to a member of staff at reception. Please allow us to try and resolve an issue before writing a review online; it is too late after you check out to help you. If you are seeking advice on what to do, what bus to take, where to go after checking out, we will do our best to help you.

Towels are available to rent at reception at €3. Perfect timing to dig out your small change from your purse, wallet or from the bottom of your rucksack.

If you wish to extend your stay, it should not be a problem provided that there is availability. Your best bet is to pop down to reception and let us know as soon as possible. Weekends during high season tend to be booked out entirely months in advance but we will try to accommodate you if we can. It also helps if you are really sound!

Check out

We won’t play a rendition of Andrea Bocelli’s ‘Time To Say Goodbye’ but we do ask all guests to have checked out by 10 am. There is no late check out service available. We asks guest to remove the pillow case, duvet cover and bedsheet when leaving, placing them in one of the laundry baskets located on the stairwell. Please do not remove the mattress protectors unless they have been soiled.

Check out means to have left the premises entirely as the hostel is quite small in size. If you need to store your luggage somewhere while you are waiting for your bus, this is okay. However, we kindly ask for you not to keep using the facilities as we need to be able to carry on with the morning cleaning routine. This is to ensure that we have the place spick and span for the next guests coming later on in the day.

Behaviour deposit

At check-in, each guest staying at the hostel is required to pay a €30 behaviour deposit in cash. This is returned provided that you do not break any of the hostel’s rules throughout your stay. Please read them carefully via this link and if you are making a reservation as part of a group, please link this page to other members in your group who are coming to stay.

The Old Mill Holiday Hostel - Rules

In order to stay at The Old Mill Holiday Hostel, a €30 behaviour deposit in cash per person is required when checking in to the hostel. Please note we only take this deposit to ensure that your time at the hostel runs smoothly and that your behaviour does not impede on fellow guests or staff. The Old Mill Holiday Hostel has been welcoming guests for over 30 years in the heart of Westport town. We do not run our business on keeping the behaviour deposits. As long as you behave correctly and create no issues, you are in no risk of losing your deposit.

  • Damage:

    If there is any damage to any part of the hostel including both inside or outside, please report this immediately. Do not leave it until the last minute and hope for the best. This includes the following: broken beds / frames, windows, toilets, showers, walls, doors, mirrors, carpets, etc.;

  • Theft:

    Missing bed linen, mattresses, kitchen equipment, other guests’ possessions, etc.;

  • Cleanliness:

    We do not expect you to leave the rooms 100% clean. However, there is a respectable cleanliness that is expected of you. Try to leave the room as best as you found it. Please remove any rubbish you have introduced to the room. Please do not vomit anywhere, and if you must, please use the toilet.

  • Abuse to fellow guests and staff:

    This includes threats, intimidation, violence, general annoyance. We will not hesitate to contact the relevant authorities if any guest is abusive to other guests and staff or members of security.

  • Introducing non-paying guests to premises:

    If you bring other people who have not paid to stay in the hostel, you are breaching house rules as they are not insured. This will be treated as trespassing and reported to the relevant authorities;

  • Food and alcohol:

    Food and alcohol are not to be stored nor consumed in the dormitories. This can be done so in the hostel’s kitchen and common area;

  • Noise:

    The hostel operates a no-noise policy during the hours from sunset to sunrise in compliance to Enviromental Protection Act 1992. So, please don’t be ‘’that person’’ who has disrupt the peace.

The above is not an exhaustive list but these are the primary reasons why a small minority of behaviour deposits have been withheld in the past. Remember, we do not want to keep your behaviour deposit, it is much easier for our staff to hand it back then to face the mentioned issues.
